TBI - Brain Injury

What Are Some Symptoms of a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)?

September 12, 20233 min read

Traumatic brain injuries can happen for many different reasons. Vehicle and bicycle crashes, slip-and-falls, and being struck by a falling object such as from a building or overpass can all cause a traumatic brain injury, or TBI. There are many different types of problems you may experience if you suffer a TBI.

Most of us are familiar with one common type of TBI, the concussion, but many types of TBIs can produce a wide range of short-term and long-term symptoms. For example, a penetrating” or “open” TBI occurs when an object strikes and pierces the skull, entering and damaging the brain. “Non-penetrating” or “closed head” TBI is when some external force moves the head hard enough to move the brain inside the skull. A concussion is a familiar example of this type of TBI.

Short-Term Effects of a TBI

Milder forms of TBI, such as many concussions, can cause headaches, vertigo, balance problems, mental fatigue, difficulty concentrating, sensitivity to light, and confusion. You might have migraine headaches and experience problems with your vision.

Because these effects are temporary, they will usually clear up within days, but in some cases, they may persist for months. Treatment may vary widely depending on the type of TBI and the symptoms you’re experiencing. In every case, it’s important that you see a doctor, follow their instructions, and make sure that you are cleared ahead of resuming your normal activities.

Long-Term Effects of a TBI

More severe forms of TBI can cause several problems that persist for months, years, or even the rest of your life. Much depends on which part of the brain has been injured because different brain areas are responsible for different behavioral and motor functions. An injury to the left side of your brain may result in problems with speech, understanding others, or logical reasoning. An injury to the right side can result in you being unable to perform usual and familiar tasks. If the front of your brain is injured, you might suddenly want to engage in risky behavior and have problems with reasoning and problem-solving.

Because these kinds of issues are more severe, they can take much longer to treat than short-term TBI problems. Individuals suffering from severe TBI may need rehabilitation and care that may continue for months or years.
